Blenders and Mixers

Preparation of drilling fluids and samples used in fluid analysis requires a variety of high speed mixers and blenders. These mixers must conform to American Petroleum Institute (API) Specification 13A and require the API recommended single mud impeller blade for mixing either water-based or oil-based drilling fluids. These mixers can also be used to mix cement for field or laboratory testing.

  • Blenders - Waring®

    Blenders - Waring®

For general purpose mixing use in laboratories. High rates of shear (rates of shear that exist in circulation of the drilling fluid in wells) are best obtained when there is little clearance between the stator and the rotor, or when the mud is pumped through a small orifice or opening.

Waring blenders, in which the blades rotate in a recessed section at the bottom of container, provide high shearing rates, and are suitable for shearing small quantities (about a liter) of mud. They can only be used for short periods of time because the temperature rises rapidly, with consequent loss of water by evaporation. The Waring Blender, with its high shear mixing impeller, is specified in several API test procedures for preparation of samples.

  • Mixer - Constant Sped Model 676

Mixer - Constant Speed Model 676

Specifically designed to prepare cement slurries for the testing of various parameters in strict compliance with API Specification 10A/ISO 10426-1:2001

The Model 676 Constant Speed Mixer is used in laboratories involved in oil well cement research programs, research and testing of cement additives, cement manufacturers quality assurance programs, and in the research for well servicing companies and their field labs.

As deeper wells are being drilled, heavier weight cements are needed to withstand higher down-hole pressures. The Model 676 Mixer has a larger motor that can handle thicker cements at the proper speed. The Mixer has control buttons programmed so the operator can save time adjusting mixer speeds and timing the mixing phases.

Clause 7 of API Specification 10A outlines the procedure for preparation of slurry for free fluid, compression strength and thickening time tests. The mixing assembly is constructed so that the blade can be removed for weighing and changing.

  • Mixers - Hamilton Beach®

    Mixers - Hamilton Beach®

Most drilling fluid formulations contain a base liquid and additives which must be dissolved or mechanically dispersed into the liquid to form a homogenous fluid. The resulting fluid may contain one or more of the following: water-dispersible (soluble) polymers or resins, clays or other insoluble but dispersible fine solids, and soluble salts.

The fluids are mixed or sheared for times appropriate to achieve a homogenous mixture and are then set aside to "age." Drilling fluid aging is the process in which a drilling fluid sample, previously subjected to a period of shear, is allowed to more fully develop its rheological and filtration properties. Aging is done under conditions which vary from static to dynamic and from ambient to highly elevated temperatures.

Hamilton Beach Mixers, Single and Three-Speed Models are recommended for use in general purpose mixing of drilling fluids in preparation for laboratory tests of mud materials. The Three-Spindle Model has independent speed controls for each spindle. These mixers can also be used to mix cement for field or laboratory testing.

The Five-Spindle Multi-Mixer® Model 9B mixer is recommended for use in general purpose mixing of drilling fluids in preparation for laboratory tests of mud materials. Five Spindle Multi-Mixer mixers are supplied with No. 9B29X impeller blades. Each spindle is fitted with a single sine-wave impeller approximately 25 mm in diameter mounted flash side up.

These mixers conform to American Petroleum Institute Specification 13A and are supplied with the API recommended mud impeller blade for mixing water-based and oil-based drilling fluids.

  • Shearing Device / Dispersator

    Shearing Device / Dispersator

The High Shear Mixer (Dispersator) utilizes a patented mixing head that pumps material into the hollow mixing chamber and outward through the chamber openings.

The blades on the mixing head are designed to draft material from above and below the mixing head and pull it into the chamber. The suction of the blades and flow through the chamber provide a more homogeneous material mix compared to other mixers which rely exclusively on centrifugal force.

This mixer achieves a higher shear in less time and maintains a homogeneous material mix without shear degradation. The mixing head is easily disassembled for cleaning and the head and shaft are replaceable.
