Fann Testing Equipment

Retorts

Knowledge of water, oil and solids content is fundamental to proper control of mud properties such as: oil/water ratio, rheology, density, filtration and salinity of aqueous phase. Knowledge of solids in oil mud is essential to evaluation of solids control equipment.

  • Multi-Retort

    Multi-Retort

The Multi-Retort is a 5-cell, 50ml oil and water retort which allows more accurate, faster, consistent, and convenient gathering of oil on cuttings data as well as oil, water, and solids analysis of drilling fluids.

Fann's exclusive Multi-Retort can simultaneously test five separate samples of drilling fluids and/or cuttings. Offshore drilling rig operators may now gather samples quicker and then more accurately interpret data about the amounts of oil and water in drilling fluids or on cuttings. This helps ensure that the amounts of oil on cuttings does not exceed established environmental boundaries and helps protect against possible pollution problems. Having the ability to test five different cutting samples under a uniform retorting temperature in all cells provides a total data consistency that is unavailable in other retort instruments.

The Multi-Retort is the most advanced instrument available to determine the quantity of liquids and solids in a drilling fluid or on cuttings. The instrument has a circular design so any retort and heating well may be rotated until the unit being loaded or unloaded is at the front for easy accessibility. Once the cell has completed its retorting, it can be positioned at the front and the cover door opened for removal with only that individual cell exposed. Then, with the holder provided, this cell can be easily moved to the cool-down rack. If desired, the entire cool-down rack of all five cells may be removed for cleaning and/or reloading.

  • Retort 10ml Oil and Water Kit Model 871

Retort 10ml Oil and Water Kit Model 871

The Model 871 Oil and Water Retort Kit is used to determine the quantity of liquids and solids in a drilling fluid. In a retort test, a measured sample of fluid is placed in a cup and heated until the liquid components have been vaporized. The vapors are passed through a condenser and collected in a graduated cylinder or centrifuge tube that has been calibrated to record the volume of the condensed liquids at 20°C. The distillate is read directly as volume percent of the solids sample's original volume. Suspended and dissolved solids are determined by subtracting these from 100 percent of the initial sample. For fresh-water fluids, the relative amount of barite and clay can be estimated. Corrections must be made for salt in the calculation for solids content by volume.

The Oil and Water Retort provides a simple, direct field method for determining the percent by volume of oil and water in samples in drilling mud or in core samples of the formation. The Retort has been found to be especially useful in determining the oil content of emulsion muds. Retorts are available in 12, 115, and 230 volt models.
